Re-Plarn

A project designed for Cyclability, the aim is to extend the lifespan of recycled plastics, namely the grocery bags and to facilitate the recycling process by creating monomaterial textiles made of LDPE type of plastics. The project explores traditional spinning technique to spin plastic bags into yarns to create sophisticated and strong woven fabrics that can be re-used in new contexts. This fabric combines the structure of textiles with the characteristics of plastic, such as durable, waterproof and lightweight. To transform plastic bags into yarns was challenging, as I don't have a spinning wheel, therefore I have to try alternative tools found at home like hand mixer and drop spindle. After several experiments, I managed to create 'plarns' (plastic bag yarn) that I need for weaving. Although handspun is time consuming, but this making method can create very fine and sophisticated yarn. I hope this project could give some new inspiration for plastic recycling. As a textile creative and maker, I want to use my practice to bring new functionality and aesthetic to recycled materials and also to revaluate traditional textile techniques.
