Yi Hsuan (Harriet) Sung

Inspired by her daily life, Yi Hsuan Sung cooks yarns from agar and food waste in her kitchen to create completely compostable textile designs. She utilizes food waste such as citrus peels, avocado pits or carrot leaves for dyes, mixing them only with natural ingredients such as salt, baking soda and vinegar to discover how they can change color. The yarns are molded into different types of loops that can be linked together in a range of ways; making the material suitable for diverse applications and potential uses. The compostable yarns that yield different textures and colors are the showcase for her exploration into food waste dyes and diverse linking techniques.

Yi Hsuan Sung is a Taiwanese material researcher and designer. She explores the meaning of “usefulness” by creatively transforming the waste that is within her surroundings. She has a BA degree in Fashion Design from Taipei Shih Chien University and is currently furthering her research in the MFA Textiles program at Parsons School of Design in New York.
