Sanya Sharma
Sanya Sharma explores the potential of creating designed spaces capable of evoking an ethereal emotion by transporting one’s mind to a different reality. Her woven textiles open up to form multi-dimensional spaces; an ode to the notion of linear reality while encouraging an intersection of suspended fragments of memories dancing across space-time. Sharma believes that we live in a world of constant disconnection from our innate desires, which only amplifies the want for escape, forcing us to grow further apart from our own selves. This idea, she proposes, stems from harnessing the desire to escape back to a memory, a joy, a moment in time one felt peaceful. What is one’s memory if not transcending a display of connections across time? For Sharma, memories have the power to exist in multiple dimensions simultaneously, all intertwined together through a series of delicate connections. Through her work, she aims to create a world fueled by imaginary bliss, a state of calm and fantasy, making one aware of their own consciousness as an entity and enabling the viewer to move beyond one’s own notion of reality.
Sanya Sharma is a textile designer from India. Growing up amidst tales and fables, she has always been intrigued by what lies beyond one’s immediate perception. Her opinions, beliefs, dreams and realities are expressed through various making processes in her work. By incorporating simple materials, slow and tedious processes, and handmade details, she strives to create spatial experiences by weaving surfaces beyond the two-dimensional confines of conventional textiles. Sharma received her B.Des from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, India and is currently pursuing her MFA in Textiles at Parsons School of Design in New York.
