Triggers – Material Workshops as an Inspiration Tool in Designing Multisensorial Wearing Experiences, Master's Thesis

Triggers is a collection of textiles and clothing, inspired by the wearers and their highly personal relationships towards materials. The role of the wearer in the fashion and clothing design process can often be rather passive. My aim was to shift the focus from the designer to the wearer and research the possibilities of a more wearer oriented approach in the inspiration process of designing textiles and clothing.

Two multisensorial and experimental material workshops were organized to research people’s relationship with materials and listen to the stories behind their experiences. These experiments resulted in a mini collection of textile-led garments that when worn can trigger different senses. The construction of the textiles, the shape, the compression and the weight of the garments play an essential role in how the pieces are experienced. The mood of the collection is somewhere in-between a home and outside setting; playing with the idea of what is considered comfortable. Unnecessary seams are removed to enrich the sensations of touch, sound and smell on the body and skin.

I’m a textile and fashion designer recently graduated from Aalto University Master’s program in Fashion, Clothing and Textile Design.
