Christin Amann
All-Woven
This upholstery concept is entirely woven on a customized loom; a usual production of an upholstery textile which involves weaving the fabric, cutting it, sewing it together and then stuffing to give the piece its form. Here, the process is reduced only to the act of weaving.
The concept emerged from the idea of whether it could be possible to weave a sofa? The upholstery is therefore entirely seamless, with no stitches glue or other components. To be able to go from 2D to 3D weaving, Christine Amann “hacked” her own loom and created a new, modified one that was assembled out of two traditional countermarch looms as well as additional parts. Amann then converted the hierarchical order and the traditional function of the warp and weft to create the strap of the upholstery. By disassembling and rethinking traditional methods and by intensifying her tools, Amann tried to give a range of options to industrial production, reducing steps to a minimum and redefining the relationship between crafts and industry.
