Comfort Zones
A practice-based project in which physical and emotional comfort and discomfort is experienced by the human body. All 3 pieces deal with the relationship between knitted filling material and cover, in which knitted structure play a central role in order to create comfort. All Zones embed the human body and create a balance of an artistic and functional expression. The elasticity of the knit is challenged when creating volume and emphasizes the idea that comfort is elastic in a physical and emotional way. With Comfort Zones, Maria embraces knitted fabric as a strong element that serves as a cover and decorative element, but most importantly highlights the ability of a knitted fabric to create its own padding and volume. Inspired by the natural curling of the knit, a tube is rolled up. Volume builds up layer by layer; a torus appears and captures a void in the center of the form, required by the tube, the fundament. The user builds up a relationship to the seating object which becomes a sustainable element by experiencing comfort through individual positioning. Designing the end of something belongs to the process of creating. Since the knit serves as both; surface and filling material, a simpler recycling process is assumed. Especially now, home comfort and intimacy take a new approach as they gain value.
